An Intimate Look in My Life

Top Twenty Movies of the 80's

For the past few years I've been running into adults who claim to have not even been alive during the 80's.  It's always so weird to me to met a person who was born in 1992 making adult decisions like voting.  I always want to ask them how they can make adult decision when they haven't lived through the reign of Ronald Reagan, they haven't experienced the sound of classic Madonna, they haven't learned the facts of life from The Facts of Life, they haven't seen David Bowie work a crowd and they didn't get the opportunity to fall in love with 80's movies.

Here are a list of my top 20 80's films

#20 The Neverending Story (1984)
Mix together The Wizard of Oz and Clash of the Titians and you'll get The Neverending Story

#19 Teen Witch (1989)

The Teen Witch is a film that not only addresses the desire for teenage social acceptance but it's also a romantic comedy packed with fun upbeat songs...how can you top that?

#18 The Worst Witch (1986)

LOL...Mildred Hubble proves to be a disaster area in this fun loving children film packed with the worlds worst singing and songs, but nevertheless I loved this film as a child.

#17 Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

DO NOT waste your time going to see the New Nightmare because it doesn't hold a match to the original.  Freddy was not only scary but he was funny and a tid bit sexy LOL.

#16 Ghostbusters (1984)

Am I the only person who had a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man doll? He was too cute! I can't imagine that there is a soul alive today that hasn't seen this film...it's a classic...enough said!

#15 Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)

Another classic.  In all of the Indiana Jones films this one happens to be my favorite perhaps it's due to the Chinese kid or the loud mouth woman but either way I love it.

#14 Elvira, Mistress of The Dark (1988)

I loved Elvira.  Her makeup was always stunning and she was forever sexy without trying to be.  A great movie about brushing off your haters.

#13 Mannequin (1987)

This movie is just fun to watch. The gay guy is hilarious and the security guard and his dog is just pathetic but equally funny.

#12 Heathers (1989)

Forget Jawbreakers or any other movie like it, this is the original.  Crockett became my favorite game after seeing this film.  I still have that crockett set my grandmother bought me and every time I play I call red LOL, but I always end up taking black...it's my favorite color.

#11 The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (1988)

My brother and I watched this movie so much that my mother hid it from us.  My mother use to ask silly questions during the movie like "how was that horse able to fit on that row boat with her?" but what she failed to see was that we didn't care if it was possible...we just liked it.

#10 From The Wonderful World of Disney: Polly (1989)
I am a sucker for musicals and this happened to be one of my favorites even though Keshia Knight Pulliam's singing was awful, but Phylicia Rashad can blow.  This is the black Pollyanna.

#9 Who's That Girl (1987)

Who didn't like Madonna in the 80's?  I still enjoy this comedy and the soundtrack is amazing!

#8 The Breakfast Club (1985)

Every girl was in love with Emilio Estevez and I was not the exception.  Not to mention that any teen movie Molly Ringwald was in during the 80's became a big success.  This is a classic and I'm sure everyone has seen it at some point.  This use to be my favorite movie to watch on rainy Saturdays when I was stuck in the house.

#7 Little Monsters (1989)

Fred Savage and Howie Mandell team up in this fun children's film.  I have to admit, I was watching this the other day and films must have had different rating in the 80's because now I don't think this film is very appropriate for children. But I love it anyway.

#6 Beetlejuice (1988)

If you've never seen Beetlejuice something is wrong with you.  I'm not even going to explain it because every normal person has seen it.

#5 The Goonies (1985)

I LOVED The Goonies when I was a child.  I own it on DVD now but can't really watch it too much because it gives me a headache...all those kids did was yell.  Yet it was still cute...a bunch of kids on an adventure...how could you not like it.

#4 The Princess Bride (1987)

This movies always brings back memories.  Every time I was sick in bed and had to stay home from school I had my mother play this film for me.  Needless to say this remind me of chicken noodle soup and my childhood bedroom.  It a funny romance that children and adults can appreciate.  Also, the Spanish guy is sexy and it's nice the see the original "Andre the Giant"

#3 Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

So I said I had a thing for musicals and this one is timeless.  Again, I can't imagine a person alive not having seen this film.  I even caught my grandmother in the shower one morning singing "Suddenly Seymour."

#2 The Labyrinth (1986)

Jim Henson developed an awesome movie once that was nothing like Sesame Street or The Muppet Babies.  It was loaded with goblins, music, creative makeup, epic 80's fashions and the iconic David Bowie.  I do believe this is one of the movies that inspired me to become an MUA.  If you haven't seen it, see it! Let the kids watch it with you...they'll enjoy it, after all it is a children's film.
#2 A Christmas Story (1983)

This was so close to being number 1 and I only placed it in the number 2 spot because it's a Christmas film but I've been know to watch this movie year round.  It's a classic and I would believe it's in most people's movie collection.  It's super funny and I'm sure every child - boy or girl - can relate to Ralphie and his ordeal just being a child.

#1 The Money Pit (1986)

If I had a penny for every time I watched this movie I'd probably be a billionaire. Despite the fact that I know every line in every scene I still laugh until my side hurts.  Every time I sit down to watch this movie I say "I'm not going to laugh because I know all the jokes and punchlines" yet every time I laugh until I hurt.  This movie marks the moment where I feel in love with Tom Hanks and I've been in love ever since.

Other great movies that didn't make the list include:
The Color Purple (1985)
Short Circuit (1986)
Back To The Future (1985)
E.T. (1982)
The Terminator (1984)
Robocop (1987)
Karate Kid (1984)
