Hair Care

I am currently in a transitional phase with my hair. I have not been relaxing my hair in hopes to one day be completely natural.  While my youtube channel will follow my transition I plan to have more intimate details of my hair stages and hair care posted to this blog.

I'd like to start by saying this choice to go natural has nothing to do with the health of my hair.  Healthy hair is VERY important to me and I made sure my hair was healthy even in its relaxed state.  Below is a photograph taken about a month or two after my last relaxer and you can see for yourself how healthy I kept my hair.
I should also state that my hair is NOT dyed...it just turns that color and I've hated it since I was a child

My decision to go natural is for the versatility and styling options that are available to women with natural hair.  With my hair relaxed I never liked for it to grow past shoulder length and I would keep it cut shoulder length or shorter - with the rare exceptions when I would allow my hair to grow longer.  I found that long straight hair is very limited in styling options and there is no fun in it.  With natural hair you can wear it curly one day, straight the next and wavy the day after that.  You can straighten it to show your long hair for a few days and then when you get bored you can wear it shorted the next week without having to cut it - just by washing it and allowing it to shrink.  For a person as fickled as I am when it comes to hair styles, I need that versatility.

I stopped relaxing my hair in May 2010 as a bet that I took on to prove a point but found it easy to agree to since I had wanted to go natural for some years now unfortunately, each time I would cut my hair very short and then wouldn't have a variety of styling options available to me so - out of boredom - I would eventually return to relaxers.  This transition will allow my natural hair to grow out to a decent length that I will eventually be able to style in various hair styles.

My goal through youtube and my blog is to show women who follow me on this journey that as black women, we are masters of transformation. We've created wonderful designs with our hair and we should be proud of our innovations.  Hair is an art and we do marvelous things with it, but sometimes it's nice to see examples of women who embrace how we look naturally.  I want to be one of those examples showing that not only can you look amazing with relaxed hair, permed hair, colored hair, long hair, short hair, but you can also look good with transitioning and natural hair.

My Month By Month Transition Hair Styles

July
The end of June beginning of July was when I really started styling my hair in Transitional styles this first style is very easy and happens to be my signature hairstyle for bad hair days.  The idea came for Yaya Dacosta pictured wearing the style below.

To see how to achieve this simple style check my youtube video:
This frohawk style is very similar to the above hairstyle the only difference is I leave the back down to achieve this look

This style was designed to wear for an evening out. You can see how it was achieved by checking out the video on youtube:

August
When August came so did more new growth which allowed me the styling option of wearing my hair down and lifting the roots to get more of a fuller natural look.

The curls/waves in my hair was achieved by doing a flat twist out which I currently do not have a tutorial for.

This is a few day old braid out with my roots lifted.  When I wear my hair like this people mistake it for being 100% natural.  I think because it looks dry LOL.

This is a wash and go that was done by mistake.  After stepping out of the shower I realized I had an appointment I needed to be at so no time to really do my hair.  I used FX curl activator on my relaxed ends and scrunched them in my hands forming waves. Then I blew out the roots and allowed the rest of my hair to air dry.

September
My hair has gotten to that stage where I really don't want to do it but I am still hanging in there. I believe the problem is I ran out of my Carols Daughter leave in conditioner and I have to wait until I go to her store again to get some more. Without it, detangling is a headache.

This look is very iconic and 60's.  It's a real simple updo I came up with one day that seems to be liked everywhere I go.  The tutorial is coming soon to youtube.

This is the first time I've absolutely loved a twist out that I've done.  Looks like I will be doing more of them since they are easy to do and now they turn out this good.  I haven't been trimming my ends like I usually do every month (during my relaxer days) because I wanted my hair to be shoulder length when it's curled.  I think I'm almost at that point where I can start trimming again.
